Waterworks
Preparing people for extreme weather events-
How might we help people better prepare for extreme weather events?
It is estimated that more than 1 billion people globally reside in informal settlements, which are susceptible to disasters.
Extreme weather can occur unexpectedly, so it is crucial for people to be ready for any possible weather conditions. Such conditions can cause property damage, injuries, and even fatalities. Besides having a basic emergency plan, individuals should also prepare specifically for thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes, and other disaster events. Being well-prepared is essential for staying safe during severe weather events.
In many and various ways, human activity is causing rapid changes to our global climate that are contributing to extreme weather conditions.
So what we do now?:
The idea to help!
Waterworks is an application that allows you to track daily water consumption within your family or personally. In this way,you can take actions, receive recommendations, and optimize water usageto help society combat resource depletion through small personal actions.
The crisis
Usually, the water crisis has become an everyday issue without much importance. People go about their daily routines without thinking about actions that could be improved to reduce water consumption (an endangered resource) and have left it in the hands of the government. The project will focus on showcasing the information you learn, the habits you can adopt, or the data literacy to encourage individuals to take more conscious actions for the planet from their homes.
What would be the best way to teach, show, and share this information with people so they know where they can improve?

The Solution
Our solution is a water management device that gives the customer a platform to manage their water consumption. The device provides the customer with analytics and features that alerts them on their household consumptions.

Research
It is estimated over 1 billion people worldwide live in informal settlements that are vulnerable to disasters.
Extreme weather can strike at any time, so people should be prepared for any potential weather conditions. These weather conditions can lead to property damage, injury and death. In addition to a basic emergency plan, individuals should have plans in place for thunderstorms, hurricanes, tornadoes or other disaster events. Preparation is the key to staying safe in a severe weather event.

Theories
Overall, while no single extreme weather event can be directly attributed to climate change, climate change is contributing to more frequent and severe events in many parts of the world. As an area of focus for our research, my group choose to explore Water Scarcity & Droughts as an extreme weather event
Insights
Building resilience and preparedness for water scarcity through measures such as water conservation and efficient irrigation systems can help to minimise the impacts on communities and ecosystems.
Water scarcity can have significant impacts on human health, agriculture, and ecosystems. It can lead to crop failures, food shortages, and higher food prices, as well as reduced availability of water for drinking, hygiene, and sanitation. In some cases, it can also lead to conflicts over water resources.
As a result of our research we started brainstorming so as to narrow down further the research goal.

Final How Might We
How might we develop an information system for water management during water scarcity?
Starting to go deep
In our group, we have lived in 3 different continents and realised we have all had experiences with water scarcity in one form or the other. We decided to conduct our research in these 3 different continents.
Choco, Colombia
Cape Town, South Africa
Mendrisiotto, Switzerland
Climate change impacts also differ from region to region. "So even for similar types of extreme weather, it can still be different for different regions.

Outcome
From our user research and insights, we clustered common themes and insights we discovered to help us with a final solution. As our aim is to educate and prepare users for extreme events , we wanted to design a system for the users to familiarise themselves with processes to manage resources during these events.
Our solution is a water management device that gives the customer a platform to manage their water consumption. The device provides the customer with analytics and features that alerts them on their household consumptions.
This project was mainly a research project to learn more about these extreme events and ideate on how users can have a better experience. After this I went ahead to make some wireframes and designs of the dashboard for users to manage their water
